Why solar panels are the number one bird problem on a modern roof

The gap between a solar panel and the roof sheet is close to a perfect nesting site - sheltered from weather and predators, warm from the panels above, and completely hidden from the ground. Pigeons and starlings find it quickly and they colonise it, because once one pair nests successfully the site keeps being used. Most people never see the birds going in. They notice the noise first, or staining down the roof, or a gutter that has stopped draining.

  • Scratching, cooing or scuffling overhead, usually worst at dawn
  • Droppings streaked down the roof sheets, gutters or the wall below
  • Nesting material and feathers washing into the gutters
  • Gutters overflowing in rain that never used to trouble them
  • Birds repeatedly landing on the same section of roof
  • Mites appearing inside the house, often in an upstairs room

What it costs if it is left alone

A nest under an array is not just mess. Nesting material packs into the gap and traps moisture and debris against the roof, droppings are acidic and build up on panels and roof sheets, and the blocked gutters that follow are a fire risk in their own right. The mites that live in a bird nest do not stay in the nest either - they move into the roof void and then into the rooms below, which is how a lot of people discover the problem in the first place. None of it resolves on its own, because the site is still available.

Solar bird proofing we have carried out

Mesh installations on local jobs - fitted to the array perimeter and the gaps between panel rows, which is where birds actually get in.

A rooftop solar array heavily stained with bird droppings, with black mesh fitted along the open edge between the panels and the roof below.
Mesh along the open edge of an array. The staining across the panels is what a colonised roof looks like before anyone gets up there.
Black bird-proofing mesh fitted along the perimeter of a rooftop solar array on a flat roof, closing the gap between the panels and the roof below.
Mesh fitted around the array perimeter. This is the gap birds use, and closing it is what makes the fix last.
Mesh clipped along the gap between two rows of solar panels on a flat roof, with bird droppings across the panels and the walkway between them.
Mesh clipped along the gap between two panel rows. The droppings on the panels and the walkway show how long the birds had been using it.
Black mesh fitted along the edge of a solar array where it meets a raised section of metal roof, with bird droppings across the panels.
Mesh closing the gap along the edge of an array. Droppings across the panels like these are usually the first sign birds are living underneath.
Mesh fitted around the edge of a solar array on a red corrugated metal roof, with a black gutter brush in the gutter at the roof edge.
Mesh around the array edge, with a gutter brush along the gutter line on the same roof so the birds have nowhere else to settle.
Bird spikes fixed along the parapet edge of a red metal roof, with mesh along the edge of the neighbouring solar panels.
Spikes along the parapet and mesh along the panels on the same job. Closing the array only works if the birds cannot just move to the next ledge.

How it works

  1. 1

Tell us what you have noticed

Call or send the form with your suburb, whether the house is single or double storey, and what you have seen or heard. That is usually enough for us to tell you what is likely involved before anyone comes out.

  2. 2

    We get up and look

A licensed technician checks the array, finds where the birds are getting in and confirms what is nesting there. We would rather see it than quote blind, because the perimeter length and the roof access are what set the job.

  3. 3

    You get a clear quote

The plan and the cost, explained plainly, with no obligation. If we think proofing is not the right answer for your roof we will say so.

  4. 4

    Clear it, then close it

Existing nesting material and debris come out first, because meshing over a live nest traps the problem in. Then the mesh goes on around the array so the space stops being available.

What we do not touch

We are licensed pest technicians, not solar installers or electricians. The mesh is fixed around the array - we do not remove and refit your panels, we do not touch the wiring, inverter or mounting system, and we do not service or clean the panels as a solar job. If your array turns out to need work beyond proofing, that is a conversation with your solar installer and we will tell you what we saw up there rather than take it on. If you are concerned about your installation warranty, check its terms with whoever fitted it before we start - it is a fair question and we would rather you asked it first.

Do you have to remove the solar panels?

No. The mesh is fitted around the perimeter of the array, so the panels stay where they are and the wiring is not touched. Removing and refitting panels is solar installer work and it is not what this job needs.

How do I know there are birds under there rather than in the roof?

Often you cannot tell from inside, which is why it gets missed. Birds under an array are usually loudest at dawn and the noise is overhead rather than in the ceiling, and you will normally see staining or nesting debris on the roof or in the gutters. A technician on the roof can confirm it in a few minutes.

Will the mesh affect how the panels perform?

The mesh sits around the array rather than over the panel faces, so it does not shade them. We are not solar technicians and we do not measure output - if you want the panels themselves assessed or cleaned, that is a job for your installer.

What happens to the mess that is already under there?

It comes out before anything is closed up. Meshing over an existing nest traps the nesting material, the droppings and the mites in place, which leaves you with the same problem and no way to reach it. Clearing first is part of the job, not an extra.

Can you do this on a two-storey house?

Usually, but tell us when you call. Height and roof pitch are what determine the access equipment and they are the main thing that changes the quote, so it is better raised at the start than discovered on the day.

Will they just come back?

Not to that spot, which is the point of proofing rather than simply clearing the nest. Birds return to a site that worked for them, so unless the access is physically closed you end up paying to clear the same nest again. After a serious storm it is worth having the fixings looked at, as mesh can lift.
