The short version
If you manage a site, you have probably been handed a supplier's Cm3 logo and had no idea what it meant. It means an independent third party has reviewed that contractor's safety management system, checked their insurances and licences are current, and matched all of it against the risk of the work they do. It is a procurement and safety check, not a quality award. It tells you the contractor is safe and legitimate to have on your site. It does not tell you they are good at pest control — that is a separate question, and you should still ask it.
What Cm3 actually verifies
Cm3 is an Australian contractor prequalification and compliance platform. Contractors submit evidence, safety professionals assess it, and organisations that engage contractors use the result to decide who is allowed on site. The assessment is scaled to a business risk profile, so a contractor doing higher-risk work is held to a correspondingly higher standard than one doing low-risk work.
- A documented work health and safety management system — that it exists, and that it is appropriate to the work
- Insurances, including public liability and workers compensation, checked as current rather than simply claimed
- Trade licences and competencies relevant to the work being performed
- A risk profile matched to the type of work, so the depth of assessment fits the job
- Ongoing monitoring, with alerts when an insurance or licence is approaching expiry
Why a business or strata scheme asks for it
Because the duty does not stop at your own staff. Under NSW work health and safety law a business has duties toward the workers it directs or influences, which includes contractors on its premises, and those duties are shared where more than one party has them. That leaves whoever manages the site needing to show they took reasonable steps to check a contractor before letting them work. Doing that from scratch for every supplier is slow, so many larger organisations, managing agents and facilities teams outsource the check to a prequalification platform and simply require suppliers to be on it. For a contractor, being prequalified removes an onboarding step. For the site, it is evidence the check was done.
What Cm3 is not — and this part matters
It is not a government scheme, and it is not a licence. In NSW the licence to apply pesticides is a separate legal requirement handled by the regulators, and no prequalification platform replaces it. It is not an accreditation or a certification of the pest work itself, and anyone describing it that way is overstating it: nothing in a Cm3 assessment looks at whether a termite treatment was designed correctly. It is not a legal requirement either — no law says you must engage a Cm3 contractor; organisations choose to require it. And it does not transfer your own duties to your contractor. If a supplier implies that hiring them makes you compliant, treat that as a reason for caution rather than comfort.
How to check a pest contractor properly
Prequalification is one input. If you are responsible for a site, these are the questions that actually establish whether a contractor is both safe and competent.

Ask for the pest management licence
The individual technician's licence to apply pesticides, not just the company name. This is the legal one and it is the question fewest people ask.

Ask for current certificates of currency
Public liability and workers compensation, showing dates. A prequalification checks these, but you are entitled to see them directly and a straight answer is itself informative.

Ask about prequalification only if your onboarding needs it
If your organisation runs a platform such as Cm3, ask whether the contractor is already prequalified on it — that is the difference between starting work next week and starting next month. If you have no such requirement, this question tells you little on its own.

Ask what the treatment actually involves
What is being applied, where, why that product, and what the reentry period is. Competence shows up in this answer faster than in any logo.

Ask what documentation you will receive
A written report per visit, records of what was found and used, and for food premises a bait station map. Paperwork you can produce on the day is the part that matters at inspection.
