Why solar panels need cleaning
Rain rinses loose dust, but it does not shift what is stuck to the glass. Bird droppings in particular dry hard and sit on the panel until someone removes them, and anything that covers the glass is blocking light from reaching the cells underneath. Coastal salt, pollen, leaf litter and grime from nearby roads build up the same way. Most people only notice when they look at the roof from a second storey, or when their system starts producing less than they remember.

How we clean solar panels on the roof
A technician cleans the array from the roof using a soft brush on a water-fed extension pole. The water runs through dedicated solar-cleaning equipment that filters and deionises it, so it rinses the glass clean and dries without leaving mineral spots. The panels stay where they are - nothing is lifted, unclipped or disconnected - and nothing abrasive goes near the glass. We work the panels row by row and finish by rinsing the faces down, so what comes off does not dry back on.

Droppings on the panels usually mean birds underneath
Heavy droppings on a solar array are rarely birds passing over - more often pigeons are nesting in the gap between the panels and the roof. If that is the case, cleaning alone only buys a few weeks: the birds keep using the site and the panels are dirty again. Because we are licensed pest technicians, we can clear the nest and fit mesh around the array as well - tell us when you book and we will plan for both, so the cause goes with the mess.

What we do not touch
We are licensed pest technicians, not solar installers or electricians. We clean the glass faces of the panels; we do not remove or refit panels, we do not touch the wiring, inverter or mounting system, and we do not test, repair or service the solar system itself. If something looks wrong with the installation, we will tell you what we saw and you can take it up with your installer. If you are concerned about your installation warranty, check its terms with whoever fitted it before we start.

Anything covering the glass blocks light from reaching the cells, so removing it helps - but we are not solar technicians and we do not measure output, so we will not promise a figure. If you want the system's performance assessed, that is a job for your installer.
Why do my panels keep getting covered in bird droppings?
Usually because birds are nesting under the array rather than just passing over. Cleaning removes the mess but not the reason for it. We can check underneath while we are up there and, if birds are using the gap, quote to clear it and fit mesh around the array.
