The tell is the damage rather than the insect: yellow staining or small holes in paper, books and clothing stored in cupboards. Silverfish themselves are small, flat, silvery and fast, and they run for cover the moment a cupboard opens — so most people see the damage first.
Are they actually harmful?
Not to people or pets — they do not bite and they carry no disease risk. The damage is to your belongings: paper, books, documents, wallpaper, cardboard and natural fibres. If you store anything you care about in a damp cupboard, that is what is at risk.
Why do I keep getting them?
Because they are damp-driven. The region's coastal humidity keeps cupboards, subfloors and poorly ventilated spaces at the moisture level silverfish need. Treatment clears the population, but unless the damp and airflow in those spaces improve, the conditions remain favourable — so we always tell you which spaces are the underlying problem.
Can you fix the damp problem too?
No — improving ventilation or addressing a moisture source in a building is a building trade, not pest control, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we do is treat the silverfish and tell you clearly where the damp is concentrated so you can get the right trade onto it if you want to.
