Pest pressures in Thirroul
Thirroul's narrow strip between the escarpment and the ocean gives it damp, humid conditions and bushland at the back fence of many homes. Older cottages and timber-framed houses are common, and the escarpment's rainforest gullies bring termites, spiders and possums closer to living areas than in most of Wollongong.
Termites
Escarpment bushland, humidity and older timber homes make subterranean termites one of the biggest risks in Thirroul.
Cockroaches
Coastal humidity keeps cockroaches breeding close to year-round in kitchens, subfloors and drains.
Possums
Bushland at the back of many blocks means brushtail possums in roof spaces are a common call.
Spiders
Damp gardens and bush edges bring huntsmen and web-building spiders to eaves and outdoor areas.
Pest activity through the year
Humid spring and summer evenings bring termite swarming and cockroach activity, and possums in roof spaces are reported year-round. Damp conditions keep moisture pests such as silverfish active into the cooler months.
Termites in Thirroul's older timber homes
Humidity, escarpment bushland and a high share of older timber-framed homes make Thirroul one of the higher termite-risk parts of the northern suburbs. We recommend a professional inspection at least once a year, and we carry out full termite inspections, pre-purchase visual inspections worked to your contract deadline, and targeted treatment — baiting, dusting or a chemical soil barrier — matched to the construction in front of us.
Possums in the roof
Heavy thumps and slow movement in the roof after dusk usually mean a brushtail possum. Possums are protected in NSW, so we remove them humanely by trap and release under the rules that apply, and we will point out where it is getting in so a roofer or handyman can close the gap.
